To Our Students, Families, Program Partners, Supporters and our Voyageur Outward Bound Community,
Kurt Hahn designed Outward Bound to train people how to manage and go forward in the face of challenge and adversity, for both communities and the individual. We believe that everyone is needed and that couldn’t be more true than at a time like this. For our students, parents, partners, supporters, staff and community, we are prepared to address this current challenge with calm, confident and compassionate resolve, and we will do it together… because that’s what we believe in. That’s what we do.
As the COVID-19 situation continues to evolve, we will continue to evolve with it and address the needs in front of us, while preparing as best we can for what’s to come.
At VOBS, what that means is this:
We will continue to place the safety of our students, staff, supporters and community first. Safety and compassion will remain at the center of everything we do, just as it did before.
We are following and will continue to follow the guidance of the Center for Disease Control, World Health Organization and our local health departments as recommendations and protocols are set. This may mean having to rapidly change course as the disease develops but just as we do on expedition, we will assess the situation, examine the risk and move forward with calm, confident and compassionate action.
As part of a crew, we will care for our own needs while continuing to support the needs of the team. This means, we will stay home from work when we are sick or exhibit symptoms in an effort to control the spread of germs, we will care for our space by taking extra steps in cleaning and sanitizing the environment around us, we will practice social distancing as best we can, and we will provide information to our community as frequently as we can.
And above all, compassion. We recognize that everyone will be affected by COVID-19 differently. Because of this, we will listen, we will ask questions, we will act, and we will keep you informed.
Course/Program Information for Parents, Students, Partners and Clients:
If you are concerned about the possibility of future cancellations due to potential COVID-19 related travel restrictions or a COVID-19 illness personally impacting your family, please know that we have updated our cancellation policy and created a COVID-19 FAQ's page. We'd be happy to talk through this new policy at any time: 828-239-2376 or email@example.com.
All international and domestic programs offered by the Outward Bound network of schools in the United States will be suspended through May 31st. Outward Bound USA is committed to reducing the rate of ‘community spread’ and its emerging systemic impact on public health. While the landscape is changing daily, we remain hopeful that some, if not many summer courses will run. Check back periodically for updates as we continue to re-evaluate. If you have questions about your upcoming course, please reach out to our student services team directly: 828-239-2376 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Information for Staff and Supporters:
Outward Bound is a community, and our community gatherings and events are also impacted. On March 12th, Outward Bound USA recommended to our Schools and supporters that gatherings and events of over 50 people should be cancelled or postponed for at least a month. This recommendation includes all Staff, Alumni and Fundraising events, and is in alignment with CDC guidance. VOBS does not have any events scheduled during this time; however, our Annual Meeting and Open House (scheduled for May 6th) may be affected. As we continue to monitor concerns and risks around COVID-19, we may decide to postpone this event.
COVID-19 is an emerging issue and unlike anything most of us have seen in our lifetimes. We will continue to monitor the situation and take proactive steps in support of the national effort to slow the spread of this disease and to reduce the risk of significant impacts to our students, our staff and our communities.

If you are a student or parent of a student on a current or upcoming course, please reach out to our student services team directly, as they will have the most up to date information regarding the course. If you have general inquiries regarding VOBS and our response to COVID-19, in an effort to provide timely responses to inquiries, concerns, or questions, please email email@example.com. This email is monitored and checked multiple times a day and we will respond as soon as possible.
Thank you for being part of this wonderful community. Remember to Be Calm. Be Confident. Be Compassionate. We absolutely could not do this without you and we look forward to continuing to serve you.
